Wounded Stripes take on Spartans
by Ayrton Galea - 4th December 2016Birkirkara FC will be seeking to put their FA Trophy disappointment behind them and register their second consecutive victory in the BOV Premier League when this afternoon, they take on Hamrun Spartans FC.
The Stripes conceded a major upset last Tuesday when they were shockingly eliminated from the third-round of the FA Trophy, after they were stunned and defeated by St. Andrew's with a 3-0 score.
On the other hand, before the FA Trophy match, Birkirkara had returned to winning ways last Saturday when they scored three late goals to defeat Tarxien Rainbows with a 3-1 score.
The Stripes are in the fourth place, sharing the spot with Floriana, on twenty-four point mark and a win will see them keeping the pressure on third-placed Valletta who returned to winning ways yesterday evening.
On the other hand, opponents Hamrun Spartans brought their negative run to an end last weekend when they defeated Gzira United with a 2-0 score, thanks to two goals in the second half.
The Spartans are in the sixth place joined with Sliema Wanderers with seventeen points, two points over Tarxien Rainbows and three over St. Andrew's, who shared a 1-1 draw between them yesterday afternoon.
Coach Drazen Besek will have to do without two key players for this match as Joseph Zerafa and Srdjan Dimitrov are suspended after both collected their fourth yellow card in the last league match.
In the first-round match, Birkirkara registered a narrow 2-1 victory with substitute James Brincat scoring a late goal to give his team a hard-fought victory.
The match will be played at the National Stadium and it will kick off at 14:00.
Come on the Stripes!
