Mr. Besek debuts as Coach, as Stripes take on Qormi

by Ayrton Galea - 10th January 2016

Birkirkara FC will be seeking to continue building on what they left last year and will be hoping to make them three in a row when they face the tricky task in form of Qormi FC which will mark the debut of Head Coach Mr. Drazen Besek.

The Stripes are currently revamping their squad and in fact no less than four players have been released expect for Paul Fenech who joined Balzan this month. Zach Muscat had continued his career abroad while Juan Quero and Shola Shodiya have been released in the last days.

Club's first signing in the January Transfer Market, Edison Bilbao who was part of the deal for the departure of Paul Fenech is expected to make his debut with for Stripes. On the other hand, Mauricio Mazzetti is unavailable due to a one-match ban after picking-up his fourth yellow card in the last match.

Birkirkara ended last year on the most satisfactory note as they registered two identical 3-0 victories as under the temporally guidance of Mr. Josef Mansueto, they defeated Pembroke Athleta and Mosta respectively. Two victories that heaved some sigh of relief following the last 4-0 defeat against Valletta.

The Stripes will be all out to keep the heat on joint league leaders Hibernians and Valletta, with the latter having a game in hand. The Stripes are trailing them by five points, sharing the third spot with Floriana on thirty-two points, two more than Balzan, after the latter returned to winning ways by defeating Mosta with a 4-1 score.

Qormi have of late improved their level and they overtook Naxxar Lions to climb to the tenth place, one point over the same Lions. They brought to an end their negative run of ten matches without a win, with a comfortable 4-0 victory over St. Andrew's, but lost 6-3 in their last match against Sliema Wanderers.

In the first-round match, a goal in each half by Vito Plut and Fabrizio Miccoli were enough for the Stripes to emerge as winners with a 2-1 score.

The match will be played at the National Stadium and is scheduled to kick off at 16:00.

Come on the Stripes!
