In a wonderful afternoon of football, Birkirkara managed to achieve a highly unexpected 5-2 victory over title contenders and Premier League leaders Qormi.

Our side took the lead as early as the 13th minute, when Comvalius crossed from the right were he found Michael Galea, with the latter serving an unmarked Shaun Bajada, who put the ball past the Qormi goalkeeper for the first, but not the last time!

The Birkirkara supporters were still in delirium when Qormi drew level through the usual Camillo, who found himself in a one-on-one situation against Jorge Mora, after a series of deflections.

Ten minutes later, Birkirkara were awarded a freekick from a very promising position. Up stepped Dutch forward Sylvano Comvalius, whose direct freekick hit the crossbar before going past Qormi's goal line, to re-send the Birkirkara fans, led by the usual Birkirkara Ultras, into raptures.

Birkirkara's third goal arrived after thirty-four minutes, when Comvalius served George Mallia, who again had no problem in scoring.

Qormi's Stephen Wellman, gave Birkirkara an unexpected gift when off a cross by Comvalius, without having an opposing player lurking close by, he slotted the ball in his own goal to make it 4-1 for his opponents.

A standing ovation accompanied Birkirkara off the pitch for their half-time break.

The second-half had less goalscoring opportunities, yet Birkirkara kept on pressing their opponents time and time again, and in fact, Trevor Cilia unleashed a shot from outside the box which the Qormi goalie could only push into his own net to make it five.

In the game's 87th minute, Joseph Zerafa received the second yellow card of the match, and left the team playing the last few moments with ten men. Two minutes into stoppage time, Ryan Deguara reduced the deficit by a single goal to make the final score, a remarkable 5-2 for the Stripes.

With this result, our team is now top of the league together with the same Qormi, and two points ahead of Valletta, who have a game in hand. Hibernians missed the opportunity to become the third occupant of the top spot, as they were beaten by Sliema 1-0.
