Mifsud and Zarb earn first National Team selection
by Ayrton Galea - 3rd April 2019Veronique Mifsud and Samantha Zarb have been selected for the first time with the Women's National Team, as seven Birkirkara FC players were selected for the two friendly matches against Romania.
Mifsud and Zarb have been rewarded for their latest electrifying performances with the Women's Team as they earn their first call up with the National Team despite the young age of fifteen and sixteen years old respectively.
The promising youngsters join goalkeeper Janice Xuereb, Alishia Sultana, Rebecca Bajada, Stephania Farrugia and Ylenia Carabott as the five other Birkirkara players selected for these friendly matches.
A knee injury ruled-out Veronique Mifsud out of action for the first part of the season, but the technical player's last string of brilliant performances have shown positive signs of reaching the best form for the last part of this season.
"Despite some injuries that I had, I'm happy that I'm being more consistent in my matches. I'm doing my best to prevent any more injuries to be able to play the game that I really love and I continue to improve my performances."
"However, I believe that in every match that I played, I tried my utmost effort to show my capabilities of a player. I believe that my performances in the league influenced the decision to form part of the National Team for these friendly matches."
"To be selected with the National Team is a big honour for me because it has always been my dream to represent my country at the highest level and I never imagined that this opportunity will come this early in my career. I feel very honoured to be part of the National Team."
On the other hand, defender Samantha Zarb has enjoyed a fantastic season so far. She has been a regular player for Melania Bajada's team that they are edging closer for their third consecutive title.
It was under the guidance of Coach Bajada that Zarb was transformed from an offensive player to a defensive player last season. Sharing her views to this website, Zarb acknowledged that this positional change has helped her to grow in her football career.
"Coach Melania Bajada believed in me right from the start and while I was believing that I'm capable of playing in one offensive position, she introduced me to a defensive position that helped me to win a regular place with the team."
"This positional change has already helped me in the younger levels of the National Team and to be selected with the National Team at this age means a lot because it shows my work and sacrifices that I had done so far."
"I believe that my performances with Birkirkara FC have helped me a lot to this selection. I feel honoured to form part of the National Team together with the best players in Malta."
During their training camp in Romania, Malta will play two friendly matches against the Romanian counterparts with the first match scheduled for this Thursday (Kick Off - 17:00, Malta time) while the second match will be played on Sunday (Kick Off - 10:00, Malta time).
The training camp in Romania is part of Malta's preparations for the 2021 Women's Euro qualifying campaign. Malta meets Denmark in their opening qualifier on the 29 August before they face Bosnia-Herzegovina five days later. The other teams in Group B are Italy, Israel, and Georgia.
