BOV Women's League - Birkirkara FC 2-1 Mgarr United FC
by Ayrton Galea - 15th November 2018Birkirkara FC made them five from five in the BOV Women's League as they defeated Mgarr United FC with a 2-1 score in the top of the table clash, thanks to two early goals by Kailey Willis while goalkeeper Janice Xuereb saved last-gasp penalty.
Kailey Willis, the fifteen-year-old forward, scored two goals inside the opening fifteen minutes , while goalkeeper Janice Xuereb produced a heroic save on last-second penalty as the Stripes extended their perfect start in the quest of defending the title.
The First Half
The Stripes surged ahead on the twelfth minute. A well-taken free-kick by Captain Stephania Farrugia found Kailey Willis on the second post and the towering forward hit a well-placed header past goalkeeper Rachel Borg.
Willis grabbed her second goal just three minutes later. Playmaker Tracy Teuma produced an excellent solo-action before her inch-perfect cross saw Willis hitting another brilliant header that surprised the Mgarr United goalkeeper.
The runs and movement into spaces of the Birkirkara forward was tormenting the defence and just before half-time, Willis dashed past the defence and was floored by goalkeeper Borg with the referee ordering the penalty. From the spot, Stephenia Farrugia's effort ended wide by inches.
The Second Half
After the break, Mgarr United put more numbers forward and they got back in the match on the sixty-eighth minute with a well-taken direct free-kick Hayley Bugeja that hit past goalkeeper Janice Xuereb. This was the first goal conceded after the first 428 minutes in this league campaign.
The Stripes made a fine reaction as they produced two good scoring chances which they failed to convert. Willis could have completed her hat-trick as she sprinted past the defence again, but her effort was blocked by the on-rushing keeper, while the latter saved a shot by Ylenia Carabott.
Mgarr United were awarded a penalty just before the full-time whistle, after the referee adjudicated Janice Xuereb that fouled inside the box. However, Xuereb made amendments for her foul by producing a brilliant save on Brenda Borg's penalty kick to ensure all three points for the Stripes.
