by Ayrton Galea - 4th September 2018Birkirkara FC Youth Academy product Nikolai Farrugia Cross will embark a new football experience, as the promising youngster will be joining the youth sector of the Italian Seria A side Frosinone Calcio.
Nikolai is fifteen years old and he has been forming part of the Birkirkara FC Youth Academy since the young of eight. Strange as it may seems, he has played for no less than five years as a goalkeeper, before playing the last three years as a player.
The Malta Football Association and Frosinone Calcio signed a three-year agreement to strengthen their collaboration in the field of youth development and Farrugia Cross will be one of the first two players to benefit from this link up.
Before leaving to Italy, the Youth Academy product was invited at the Clubhouse by the Club's President Mr. Frank Zarb and the committee. Mr. Zarb presented a token to the Academy product before leaving for his new experience.
We caught up with the fifteen-year-old and he started by saying, “I was really excited to be invited by the Club's President Mr. Frank Zarb before starting this new experience. He wished me for all the best of luck, while presented me a token that I'll remember for the rest of my life.”
Opportunity to play for the youth sector of Frosinone Calcio
Nikolai explained how this opportunity arrived. “This opportunity arrived after going to Italy to play with the U-17 National Team and played two matches against Frosinone Calcio. Following these two matches, they enquired about me through the MFA.”
He added, “This is a new experience for me, because I'll be without my parents and the comfortably that I had at home. However, I'm pretty sure that this experience will help a lot for my future, both in my football career and in my life in-general.”
”Playing for the National Team is always an honour for me”
Farrugia Cross is a regular member of the Under-17's Team and in fact he featured in the 2018 Trofeo Nereo Rocco which was played last week. “Playing for the National Team is always an honour for me. Myself and the rest of the team we always try our utmost to achieve positive results.”
