Post match interview with Mr. Paul Zammit
by Ayrton Galea - 20th August 2018Birkirkara FC Coach Mr. Paul Zammit has pointed out that tactical-discpline was the main-key for the winning start in the BOV Premier League, as the Stripes defeated title-contenders Balzan FC with a narrow 1-0 score.
The Stripes scored after fifteen minutes thanks to Jake Grech who converted from the spot, and they produced an empathic performance to hold firm for their narrow advantage and register the first three points of the season.
Coach Zammit opened by saying, “First of all, we knew that we built a squad relatively new as we kept the core of the Maltese players but we made a lot of new signings, so we knew that until the team gels together, we knew that we would be facing matches like this.”
“I believe that we got the three points thanks to our tactical displine that all of our players have showed. Balzan are a very strong squad and will be among the main contenders for the title as they have a lot of quality, but for all our efforts that we did, we managed to get this result.
He added, “We scored in the first half and I believe we could have used better our counter-attacks because we can now use much more our speed up-front. Balzan piled-up the pressure as expected, but we were compact enough to get this result.”
The Birkirkara Coach concluded by saying, “It is an important result as we can continue to work on what we are doing but it means nothing at all as now we'll shift all our focus to work on the next match.”
Possibility for new signings
The Stripes started their process to revamp the squad after the end of the season, but their European journey was cut short as they were eliminated in preliminary round by KÍ Klaksvík of Faroe Islands.
The Birkirkara Coach opened by saying, “A Maltese Club participating in European competitions cannot change the squad and go to play the first match on the 28 June. There is no one to blame, these are the circumstances that we knew.”
“We went to play our European matches with a depleted squad, but thanks to the players that we managed to participate in Europe. It was a situation that we tried to take the most out of it.
“Since then, the signings kept coming according to our plan as we had everything planned. I can say that I am very happy with this squad and there is the possibility for new signings till the end of August to be more competitive, as we'll look forward for the upcoming difficult matches ahead.”
Club's objectives
The Birkirkara Coach has revealed his objectives for this Club, following being one of the busiest clubs in this year's summer transfer market.
“I would not say that the Club has one specific target. We have several objectives with the most important thing being that we reform a strong squad that can give us results for a number of years, and not this year only.
“We have a lot of youngsters in our team, not only our Youth Academy products but even our actual players that now a day can be called Senior players. This also applies for several foreigners that we signed as our aim to work on long-term basis.”
He added, “My plan is that Birkirkara FC will have a strong base of Maltese players, with a good addition of foreign players but like always, I need to leave the desired space for the products from our Youth Academy.”
“With all this in mind, my aim is that although we'll be competitive, we need to build what Birkirkara FC really deserves, a squad that for a number of years challenges for the main honours, as well as my aim is to see this Club in a much stronger position in European competitions.” Concluded Mr. Zammit.
