Women U19: Birkirkara FC 3-2 Kirkop United FC
by Ayrton Galea - 25th March 2018Birkirkara FC Women Under-19's Team returned to winning ways in the Women Under-19's League Section A, when they defeated Kirkop United FC with a 3-2 score.
The Stripes were unlucky not to take the lead after just three minutes. Emma Bonnici did well to surge forward inside the box, but her low shot hit against the foot of the post.
Birkirkara continued their powerful start and they deservingly surged ahead on the twelfth minute. Samantha Zarb did fine movement down the right flank, before serving Sarah Urpani outside the box and the Birkirkara Captain's well-placed shot surprised the Kirkop United goalkeeper.
Kirkip United made the score level on the twenty-eighth minute. Demi Magrin made a good run down the left side before beating goalkeeper Anthea Enriquez with a fine low shot.
The Stripes regained the lead just before the half-time whistle. Zarb was the provider again as she unzipped the Kirkop United defence with a brilliant through-ball towards the on-running Urpani who anticipated the onrushing goalkeeper and slotted home into an empty net.
Emma Bonnici flicked the ball over the goalkeeper, before the latter saved the ball after crossing the goal-line. However, inexplicably, the assistant referee kept his flag down and the referee had no other option than to wave play-on.
There were no doubts about Birkirkara's next action as they made them three just sixty seconds later. Technical midfielder Veronique Mifsud stole possession outside the box and surged forward before her powerful shot gave the goalkeeper no chance.
Kirkop United got back in contention when they scored a late goal by Magrin, but their hopes of rescuing a point from this match were ended by the referee's full-time whistle, as the Stripes held strong for a deserved victory.
