Cain: We are confident in what we can do

by Ayrton Galea - 20th February 2018

Defender Cain Attard has rated Sunday's big match against Valletta FC as a delicate encounter, but the Birkirkara defender is confident in the team's strengths and capabilities while promising that the team will be ready for the much-awaited match.

Birkirkara and Valletta will go head-to-head in this Sunday's big fixture that can determine the faith of both sides in their quest of finishing in the top positions in the BOV Premier League. We have opened this interview by asking Cain for his comments about this match.

“We know that Sunday is a very delicate match and that Valletta are a very strong side. They are the team that conceded the least this season and have some very good players. However, we know our strengths and capabilities. We will work hard as always throughout the week and will be ready for Sunday. We are confident in what we can do.”

Few would expect that following their disappointing start in the BOV Premier League, the Stripes would make a great comeback to be in the top three positions mid-way February and being on course to achieve a place in European competitions next season.

Cain said, “As everyone knows we did not have the best of starts to the season. It was not an easy task to bounce back but thanks to the commitment and trust shown in the squad by the committee members and coaching staff we managed to climb up the table.

He added, “However, we must keep working hard because we haven't achieved anything yet. There are still 21 points to be won and lost, so I think there is still a long way to go. We will keep giving our best for the club and hopefully be satisfied with what we achieve, come the end of April.”

The Stripes extended their winning streak when they secured their place in the semi-final of the FA Trophy, after they defeated Qrendi FC with a comfortable 3-0 score. Attard opened the score for the Stripes, before Vukanac and Herrera sealed the issue in the second half.

“We knew that it wasn't going to be an easy game against Qrendi, just like the San Gwann game in the previous round. They were very compact and disciplined, but we knew we would be dominant in the game and have most of the ball. We worked a lot during the week to use our strengths in the best ways possible, in order to take advantage against a team like this. The most important thing was getting through to the next round.”

Attard went on saying, “Birkirkara FC is a team which challenges for the top honours year in, year out so for us as a squad, it was a very important step to get into the Semi Finals. Now we can focus fully on our league games and gaining as many points as possible from our last seven matches, since the FA Trophy resumes after the league. Then when the time comes we will give our all in the Trophy and hopefully go all the way.”

Finally, Cain concluded this interview with a message to the supporters. “On behalf of the squad I would like to thank them for their continuous support this season, especially to those that kept believing when we were down. We would like to encourage them to come out in their numbers next Sunday, and for the rest of the season because we need them behind us. They give us that extra push."
