Women Under-17's Team lose Knock-Out final
by Ayrton Galea - 28th May 2017Birkirkara FC Women Under-17's Team lost to Gozo FC with a 5-0 score in the Women Under-17's Knock-Out final, as four goals in the second half dashed Birkirkara's hopes of securing the Knock-Out competition as Gozo completed the double.
The full-time score suggests that it was a one-way traffic match, but in fact Gozo only took control after their second goal as the Stripes put the towel in and the Gozitians scored another three times to add further gloss on their Knock-Out success.
The First Half
The Stripes created a good scoring opportunity after nineteen minutes, but Sarah Urpani's curling shot from the edge of the box was denied with an excellent save of goalkeeper Whitney Bajada. The Gozo goalkeeper then performed another good save on Veronique Mifsud's shot moments later.
Gozo were unlucky on the twenty-fifth minute, when Maria Farrugia produced a solo-action as she drifted inside the box, but her tight-angle shot hit the woodwork.
The Gozitians surged ahead just before the half-hour mark. Leanne Cefai surged Maria Farrugia inside the box and the latter did well to dribble past her marker and slot the ball past goalkeeper Anthea Enriquez.
The Second Half
Gozo doubled the lead twenty minutes inside the second half. Jolene Camilleri caught the Birkirkara goalkeeper out of her position and doubled her side's lead with a lob from outside the box.
Two became three on the fifty-seventh minute. Maria Farrugia made another solo-action and rounded the goalkeeper, before slotted into an empty net.
Birkirkara tried to re-group but it was Gozo who added their fourth. Farrugia's free-kick was blocked by Enriquez, but from the rebound Keeva Camilleri slotted home.
Gozo added further gloss on the victory with the fifth and final goal one minute later, when Maria Farrugia dashed forward and hit home with a powerful shot.
