'Helping the team in any way is my motivation' - Sciberras
by Ayrton Galea - 4th February 2017Birkirkara FC will take on Gzira United FC this afternoon and we have interviewed Captain Gareth Sciberras before this match. With Gareth, we spoke about the team's results and his contribution to the team, the Club's record of participating in UEFA Competitions and the first month under the guidance of Coach Nikola Jaros.
1. The Club faced a number of difficult situations in the last few months. How much was it difficult for the squad to keep concentrated during this period?
It was a challenge to go through such a tough period, especially mentally but credit to the players who continued to work hard every day in training.
2. We have won three matches out of the possibility of five during January, but only one of them was against the top-three teams. Do you think that we deserved something more?
January was a strange month, we had some very good performances but the results don't show that. At the end of the day it is the result that counts, so we need to do our best to turn those positive performances into wins now.
3. The match against Hibernians was the first comeback of the team. What are your comments about making a comeback against such a very difficult opponent?
The game against Hibernians was a typical situation where we would be in control but we concede the first goal. We managed to turn the game around and show everyone that we are still in this fight. We need to stay humble and focused as we haven't achieved anything, but if we put in a performance like that every weekend then we are on the right track.
4. Putting the satisfactory result at a side, do you agree that it was one of the best performances this season? And why?
A lot of people tend to forget quickly. We have had some great performances this season, starting from our European games and also in the first round. So I will add that game as one of the better ones of the season but not the best.
5. At the age of 33 years old, this was your second BOV Player of the Match award this season. Does this have any significance for you? What keeps you motivated?
It is always nice to be recognised for my individual performance but, honestly speaking, nothing gives more satisfaction than my team winning. I just do my best to help the team in any way I can, that is my motivation.
6. We will face Gzira United in a tricky match this Sunday. What are your comments about this match?
Gzira have made some changes to their team, and like every game this will be a tough challenge.
We are eighth points under leaders Balzan after twenty matches played. Do you still give the team a chance about winning the league? Why?
For sure, there are many games to go and also a lot of direct matches. We can't have any slip ups and we must make every match count. So, yes, we will still do believe and will continue to fight!
8. The Club has a record of participation in UEFA Competitions. What is your perspective about this? Does it add extra pressure or motivation? Why?
I'm very proud that I have contributed to that record and I am looking forward to increase it!
9. This was the first month of Coach Nikola Jaros in the helm of the team. What are your comments about the team's progress under his guidance?
Coach Nikola has had a difficult job, as he entered into the fray at a very delicate time, but I think he has maintained continuity and is working every day and succeeding in installing a winning mentality.
10. What is your message for the supporters?
On behalf of the team I want to thank those supporters who have been loyal to the club and have backed us in difficult moments.
