Under-17's Team in a goal-less draw against Hamrun Spartans
by Ayrton Galea - 6th December 2015Birkirkara FC Under-17's Team picked-up their fourth point in the APS Bank Under-17's League Section A when on Sunday morning, they shared the spoils in a goal-less draw against Hamrun Spartans FC.
After starting their league commitments on the wrong foot by two defeats, the Stripes registered their first victory by beating San Gwann with a comfortable 3-1 score before sharing a goal-less draw against the Spartans.
The First Half
The first half was a balanced encounter with one clear goal-scoring opportunity per team. Hamrun were awarded a penalty five minutes into the match but goalkeeper Kurt Polidano performed a superb save from the resulting penalty kick which denied Jeremy Busuttil from putting Hamrun in the lead.
Birkirkara's best opportunity came mid-way in the first half when from a corner kick Kyle Mifsud exchanged the ball with Ayrton Attard and whipped in a cross with pace. Romario Camilleri headed the ball in Isaac Ciranna's way but the flying header of the latter was spectacularly saved by Lydon Moore.
The Second Half
In the second half the stripes gained more ground on their opponents and upped the tempo of the game.
On the seventy-first minute, Karl Caruana played the ball through to Kyle Mifsud but Kyle's shot went inches wide. Birkirkara were unlucky not to take the lead two minutes later when Gianluca Zammit's shot from a Neil Micallef through ball hit the post with the Hamrun custodian beaten.
