Stripes face Wanderers in bid to revive title hopes
by Ayrton Galea - 31st January 2015Birkirkara FC will have the perfect opportunity to revive their title hopes, and narrow the gap with leaders Hibernians FC, when on Sunday afternoon they will take on Sliema Wanderers FC.
The Stripes will be doing their utmost to recover from last week's heartache, when a goal by Andrei Agius denied the Stripes from inflicting the first defeat on Hibernians, as the top of the table clash ended in a 1-1 draw. For Birkirkara, it was undoubtedly one of their best displays this season and they will be seeking to extend their positive run.
Birkirkara are enjoying an eighth matches unbeaten run in the league. They suffered only one defeat in the second round, when in the first match they surprisingly lost to Pieta Hotspurs with a result of 4-3. Since then, the Stripes won six matches while they drew against Balzan and Hibernians.
However, the Stripes will be not tasked with an easy fixture, as the Wanderers will be all out for the three points after failing to win in their last three matches. The Wanderers lost 2-1 against Zebbug Randers, and were held in a goal-less draw against Naxxar Lions. In their last match, they threw away a 3-1 lead, to lose to Balzan with a result of 5-3, thanks to a dramatic comeback by the latter.
Both teams will be unable to field their best formation. Zach Muscat will be ruled-out suspended with a one-match ban after collecting his fourth yellow card while Sliema will have unavailable Pedro Dos Santos Calcado and Mark Scerri, both suspended after collecting their fourth yellow card.
In the first-round match, a goal by Ellinton Morais gave the Stripes a win of 1-0.
The match will be played at the National Stadium and is scheduled to kick off at 14:00.
Come on the Stripes!
