'Keep believing with us' - Mendoza
by Ayrton Galea - 17th January 2015Spanish defender Alejandro Mendoza has appealed to the Birkirkara supporters to keep believing with the players, for the remaining crucial matches of the BOV Premier League, starting this Sunday against Floriana FC.
Mendoza heaved a sigh of relief on Sunday after the ten-man Stripes hold strong to beat Tarxien Rainbows, with Mendoza leading the rearguard with a solid display, after Bissi was sent-off and Vukanac was substituted out due to injury. Mendoza said, “I think we started the game having total control of the match, but when one of our player was sent off they pushed a little bit harder towards the end of the first half. However, coming back after the half-time, we knew how to read the game, and we played really well with 10 men. Just at the end of the game when they scored, we went through a bit of troubles.”
When asked about his season so far, Mendoza said “To be honest, this season is not being as good as I would wish. Although I've always tried to do my best, my performances weren't good enough to gain my place into the first eleven. Besides I've suffered a few injuries that have caused me problems to keep myself in the best form. But I'm ready to keep trying.”
With Bissi and Vukanac suspended, it is very likely that Mendoza features in Sunday's match against Floriana. Alejandro said, “We are going to face a good team that was able to beat us during the first round, so we are expecting a tough game. But we are all really motivated and if we give a good performance we will get the three points. As usual, we were preparing for this game with high intensity and we have had very good sessions. Hopefully, we will bring all this good work to the game. In the dressing room, as I said before, we are motivated and looking forward for this game and show that we will fight till the end.”
We asked for his view about this season and he told us, “The targets are still the same as when we started the season, which is challenge for all the honours. We know that winning the league is going to be difficult, but not impossible, so we haven't given up on this, and we are going to keep fighting. I think we have supporters that make us proud to play for this team, so I will tell them to just keep believing with us.”
