Stripes, Paolites to battle it out in Women's Knockout Final
by Ayrton Galea - 16th May 2014Birkirkara FC Women's Team will this evening be bringing the curtains down on the 2013-2014 season, when in the Women's Knockout Final they will be seeking revenge over the newly crowned Champions Hibernians FC.
Following the heart-breaking title loss after a controversial penalty shoot-out, Birkirkara will have the opportunity to get revenge on their opponents, when this evening they will be battling with Hibernians for the last honour of the season.
It will take more than just three weeks for the Stripes to get over the disappointment of the cruel way that they had to hand over their crown to rivals Hibernians. However, a strong statement was made last Monday, when the wounded Stripes made a fine display and eliminated Mgarr United, with a goal in each half.
Given that the rivalry between the two sides continued to build up from the last match, expectations are high that this contest will offer an enjoyable evening from the stands.
Mr Johann Scicluna, the Birkirkara's Coach, who is suspended for today's match, gave us his comments. “We have to prove that we are still the best football team that shows the best ideas on the pitch. This game means revenge, both for my players and myself. We have worked hard and we are well prepared.”
“We are ready, and I'm turning to you, our numerous supporters, to come to the stadium and support our team. Your support during the league decider was excellent. The players and I are hoping to have the same support, and with a bit of luck, we are ready to keep the cup on our shelf.”
The Women's Knockout is the second most prestigious honour in Women's Football and Birkirkara are currently the holders of the cup thanks to defeating Mosta with a penalty shoot-out last May. The Stripes, who are the team that has won this competition most times, managed to win the knockout for a record of eleven times. On the other hand, Hibernians won it three times.
These two teams have met five times this season where Birkirkara won two matches while Hibernians won three, and this saw Hibernians winning the Women's Super Cup and the BOV Women's First Division League. However, on a brighter note for the Stripes, the 5-0 victory over the Paolites will remain a fond memory for all the Birkirkara clan for the coming years.
The match will be played at the Centenary Stadium and is scheduled to kick off at 19:00.
We would like to urge all the Birkirkara supporters to come to the stadium and support our team.
Come on the Stripes!
