Under 15's consolidate sole leadership
by Ayrton Galea - 25th November 2013Birkirkara Under-15's Team consolidated their sole leadership in the APS Bank Under-15's league yesterday, when they beat Floriana with three goals in the second half, for a score of 3-0.
Kirkop won their match, and they temporarily moved to top of the table. The pressure was on to the Stripes to regain sole leadership, and they did this with a convincing performance.
The first half saw the Stripes being rather shaky, but as soon as they realised that they could drop another two precious points, they showed great determination and an excellent attitude to increase their performance. They scored three goals in the space of just nine minutes to seal the issue and take home the three precious points.
During the first thirty-five minutes, there were only a few notable actions, as both sides managed to cancel each other's efforts. For the Stripes, they went close with several scoring opportunities as attempts namely by Ayrton Attard, Gianluca Zammit, Karl Micallef, Neil Micallef and Isaac Cirana all drifted wide or ended over.
Half-time speeches could be time for interruption or inspiration and luckily for the Stripes, the later was the case. In the second half, the Stripes wrote a different story as they took total control of the match for long stretches.
With the Stripes enjoying an edge over their opponents, it was no surprise that they took the lead. Ayrton Attard performed an excellent run as he drifted inside the box before he was floored inside the area. The referee had no other option than to order a penalty-kick. From the eleven meters spot, it was the same player who converted well by sending the ball to one side and the goalkeeper to the other side to put the Stripes in the lead.
Boosted by taking the lead, the Stripes went on by adding their second goal just four minutes later. Neil Micallef delivered an excellent cross which saw striker Gianluca Zammit rising high to hit a powerful header which gave no chance to the in form Floriana goalkeeper.
Floriana failed to settle down, as they were stunned by these two goals. To make things worse for the Greens, the Stripes sealed the issue with third goal on the sixty-fifth minute to put the three points beyond any doubt. It was Ayrton Attard once again who performed one of his typical surging runs. After he dribbled past two defenders, his shot hit past the goalkeeper for the third and final goal.
