Rebecca Chircop Interviewed
by Ayrton Galea - 2nd September 2013The Women's Team new season will commence next Wednesday as the Stripes will face off Hibernians for the first honour of the season, the Super Cup and before this match, we interviewed the Women's Team first signing during this Summer Transfer Market, Rebecca Chircop.
Rebecca who turned 25 this summer, joined our Club in the beginning of July and she had already made wore the Stripes' shirt as she was part of the squad which took part in the UEFA Women's Champions League.
Who is Rebecca Chircop?
My name is Rebecca Chircop and I am 25 years old. I work as a Financial Controller in a Hotel. I am a cheerful person and try to help others as much as possible.
How do you spend your regular days?
In the morning I work from early in the morning till around 18:00 and I go straight to training. After I go home and relax.
How do you spend your weekends?
I spend my weekends out with my friends.
What is your favourite kind of music?
Italian songs are my favourite.
Do you have a favourite quote or motto?
What's meant to be will always find its way.
Do you follow international football? If yes, which is your favourite nation when it comes to football, and which is your favourite club?
I support Italy and of course one of the best teams in the world Juventus FC.
How did your love for football begin? At what age did you start playing football?
It started from when I was a little girl in primary. I used to watch it on TV with my dad and then at school I used to be the only girl playing with the boys.
Do you work? If yes, how hard do you find it to balance work, football and personal life? How much sacrifice is involved?
When it comes to personal life you need to sacrifice a lot since as I already mentioned, nearly every day during week days I arrive home at around 20:30 and you cannot do much after 20:30 knowing that in the morning you need to wake up early. Also for work you need to sacrifice a lot since in Malta we do not have the mentality to accept sports during work and also even though we are in 2013 there are some people that still have the mentality that football is male sports. We'll speak in 5-10 years time about it.
Can you tell us a bit about your previous experiences?
I joined Mosta FC at the age of 17 years and after 8 months I joined Hibernians. I played with Hibernians for 3 years and after re-joined Mosta where I spent the last 4 years.
Why did you join our Club?
I think that Birkirkara is the most organised women's club in Malta. They have people dedicated and not only do they love the game but they love the women's football.
How is your adventure with our Club going?
It is going better than expected since I was overwhelmed by the team and they made me feel welcome from the first day.
How do you describe the atmosphere in the dressing room?
The atmosphere is a very happy and friendly one. As I already said no one can find it difficult to integrate with this team since all the players are friendly.
Who is your favourite team-mate?
I do not have a favourite team mate as such since we are a young group and everyone gets along well with each other.
How is your relationship with the Coach?
There is nothing bad I can say. I find him disciplined and he respects the players. When there's need to be harsh he is harsh and when there's the need to laugh he laughs.
How do you describe the UEFA Women's Champions League experience? What are your in general comments about our performances?
Well, you still cannot compare us with those teams. There is another level in the Champions league but I think that we did our best and in general everyone gave his utmost even though the results did not show.
What are your comments about next Wednesday's match? How the squad is preparing for this match?
We had the best preparation possible since we played three games at the highest level. Also thanks to Coach Johan, Assistant Coach Johnny and our physical trainer Chantal. I think we are physically there.
What is your personal target for this season?
My personal target is to reach the level and be better from when I left before the cruciate injury I had last year.
What is the secret for success? How much do you believe that you and your team-mates can achieve the Club's targets?
I think we can and this is because there is not a minute during training that we don't take it seriously and I believe that when doing things seriously you can achieve everything.
Do you have a message for the supporters?
This is my first domestic game with the Birkirkara shirt. Would love to see you all there and promise we'll try to make it a night to remember. Come on girls let's do it!
