Under 15s End Their Campaign With Fine Win Over Tarxien
by Jonathan Spiteri - 27th May 2013Our Under 15s team managed to end their league commitments for this season with a 3-0 win over Tarxien Rainbows at the Rabat Ajax Ground on Thursday evening. Even though there was no chance of obtaining promotion, this win helped Birkirkara to keep hold of third place ahead of Pembroke Athleta.
The players showed great intent to make amends for the anonymous display against St Patricks in their previous game and started attacking at will. The strong winds were effecting Birkirkara's forwards when coming to conclude towards goal, but still did not have to wait for long as Ryan Muscat opened the score after 10 minutes. The Stripes continued to press Tarxien not allowing them to get a string of passes together, and it was no surprise that the score became 2-0, curteousy of a goal by Neil Micallef. A long range effort by Kieran Xuereb hit the crossbar just a few minutes before half time. The half time whistle saw Birkirkara in complete control with a two goal cuscion lead.
Tarxien's reaction failed to materialise in the second half, with the YellowReds controlling them without much effort. Seeing this, Birkirkara players started searching for personal glory, wasting a handful of scoring chances, until Ryan Muscat sealed the issue with his second goal of the game to make it 3-0. The game then lost its interest and the score remained the same until the final whistle, which brought a few smiles in the Birkirkara clan, but still did not atone for the disappointment of not obtaining promotion to Section A.
Coach Charles Micallef was pleased with his players' response and approach for this last game of the season. “Well done to all who made our last game an enjoyable one, while I will keep on stressing on team work since we could have seen more happy faces during our last game. A big thanks goes to all the players who waited patiently on the bench for their chance to arise. Also for their full attendance during all training sessions proving that they were enjoyable. My final thanks towards the players goes to those who showed interest in learning and improving their performances from previous years. Well done.”
