'The key is our hard work, dedication and winning mentality' - Chantal Fenech
by Ayrton Galea - 7th May 2013Today is the big day for the Women's Team. Today the squad could receive the deserved award for all their hard work by being crowned Champions for the second consecutive time. Before this highly anticipated match, we decided to interview one of the most experienced players in the squad, Chantal Fenech.
No need for introduction, Chantal's' experience is essential for the team especially when considering the young average age of the squad.
We're just a few hours away from the match that can see us crowned champions. What was the secret for success which helped us reach this position?
The key is our hard work, dedication and winning mentality. These are our main characteristics, which make us such a successful team and overcome most of our obstacles.
What were the hurdles that the squad faced throughout the season, and how did the players manage to overcome them?
The biggest difficulty we had was the absence of some players due to various reasons, mostly due to injuries. However we have a very good squad, were all the players are well prepared. In fact this can be seen clearly by the different starting formations that have started in various games.
What are your comments about our last match? What were the positive aspects of the match?
Gozo played a very defensive game in fact they had most of their players at the back making it hard for us to penetrate in our attacking zone. We were also unfortunate that Rachel Cuschieri, one of our key players, got injured in the beginning of the match. However our team showed character and determination and with a collective effort managed to equalise the result
How is the squad preparing for the match? How is the atmosphere between the players?
This last week the team continued with the good work which has been started throughout this season. The atmosphere is a very positive one and I can say that the whole team is eager to go on the pitch tomorrow to achieve what we have been working for all year.
How much do you believe that despite having suspended players we can win this match?
Having 3 players suspended may sound like a bad situation but I think that this has strengthened our relationship as a team as this unfair situation has increased our want for the league.
As one of the most experienced players, you played these type of matches. What is your message to the players especially the young ones?
We have been through a lot throughout this season. We had lots of ups and a few downs. We had good results and disappointing ones. But this is the time to make it all count; to make it all worth it. To take back what is ours - The title.
Support is always important, especially in these type of matches. What is your message for the supporters?
We had a great support throughout this season and I must say they have been very encouraging and boosted us in our performance. I'm looking forward to see our supporters at the match and hope that many other Birkirkara supporters will come to see the game. We will make you proud.
