Under-15's End Their 2012 Commitments With A Win

Birkirkara Under-15s last Saturday brought their 2012 league commitments to a winning end by beating their Zebbug counterparts 4-1 at the Sirens Ground. It was a very good all-round performance by the team who bounced back from the defeat against Qormi and stayed in the hunt for a promotion slot.

The Stripes opened the score early on with their first real attack, as a good through ball by Jamie Zerafa unlokced the Zebbug defence and Kieran Xuereb found no difficulty in beating the opposing goalkeeper. The game opened up ad our boys started to created one scoring opportunity after the other, as the difference in quality between the two sides started to show. After various attempts, Birkirkara doubled the score as a crossfield ball found full back Nigel Bugeja whose perfect pass was the perfect invite for Kieran Xuereb to get a brace. The first half ended 2-0.

Even though during the second half the strong wind was blowing opposite to where they attacked, the Yellow-Reds were still playing the better football. They seemed to be in control, but a rare foray by the Zebbug forward line ended up in a penalty in their favour, which was duly converted to reduce the gap. This goal did not undermine our boys' determination to see this game through comfortably, and soon after they restored a two-goal lead. Nick Borg beat the offside trap and slotted the ball past the onrushing Zebbug ‘keeper. Substitute Owen Amato rounded up the score as he met a Nigel Bugeja corner with a winning header. The Stripes could, and should have increased the score, but in the end the result remained unchanged.

The win puts Birkirkara back on track before the ‘winter break', and coach Mr Micallef was a relieved man. “Very satisfied with the outcome of the game and the boys' input. I was pleased to see the team holding control of the game and creating a lot of chances. Although we could have scored more goals I was pleased that the goals came from intelligent build-up as one team. Well done to all the boys and let's keep on working hard on our team work.”

Like the Under-17s, we are still waiting for the upcoming fixtures to be issued by the Youth FA. These will be published on this website in due course.
