Birkirkara to face Valletta in the match of the week
by Ayrton Galea - 21st April 2012Birkirkara will be aiming to bounce back from last week's defeat, when in the match of the week, they will face leaders and eternal rivals Valletta.
Last Sunday, Birkirkara did not start the fourth and final round as they wished as they were defeated by Floriana with a 2-1 score. It was a defeat which many considered to be harsh for 'The Stripes' who dominated for long stretches.
On the other hand, Valletta continued marching on and moving closer to their 21st title. After beating Hibernians in the last match of the third round to go six point clear in the pole position, they defeated Balzan Youths in the opening match of the fourth round.
To take a look at the third round for both teams, Birkirkara collected 14 points thanks to three wins and two draws. They scored 11 goals and conceded just three to register the best defence of the round. On the other hand, Valletta collected 16 points as they registered five wins and a draw. In fact it was only Birkirkara who managed to stop Valletta from their winning streak. Valletta scored 15 goals to register the best attack of the round while they conceded five goals.
Although they slid back to the fourth position, Birkirkara who have 29 points are still in the run for the third place and without any doubt a win tomorrow will lift back their morale for the remaining matches. On the other hand, leaders Valletta who are with 44 points will surely want to extend their unbeaten run, and maintain their lead over Hibernians.
Valletta won the first two rounds with scores of 2-1 and 4-1 respectively. In the third round, a late equaliser thanks to a penalty converted by Moises Avila Perez, saw Birkirkara grabbing a deserved point.
The match will be played at the National Stadium and it is scheduled to kick off at 17:00. Transport from Valley Road will leave at 16:00.
Come on the Stripes!
