Interview with Nikola Vukanac
by Ayrton Galea - 18th February 2012Just a few hours after Birkirkara defeated Tarxien, and thus secured a place in the Championship Pool we interviewed Serbian defender Nikola Vukanac. In this interview we learned more about Nikola as we talked about his personal life, his adventure with our Club and the team's present situation.
Who is Nikola Vukanac?
My name is Nikola Vukanac and I'm 26 years old. I'm born and raised in Belgrade, the capital city of Serbia. I can say that I'm a very positive and optimistic person, I'm always trying to give my best in every area and I never give up on things. Hard life taught me to fight and to go towards my goals.
How do you spend your regular day?
In Malta my day usually begins with having breakfast and then going to the gym. After I find some free time for a rest, then go with my friends in some of the many beautiful places in Malta, browsing internet, and watching movies. After I go to training with the team and I finish my day with dinner, some good TV series, documentary or movie, or a walk next to the sea.
How do you spend your weekends?
In weekends we often have a game so I try to prepare myself best as possible for every match and after if the result is good, I can go out with friends and relax a bit.
What are your main hobbies besides football?
My favourite hobbies beside football are tennis, collecting match tickets from my favourite club Red Star Belgrade, going to the gym, etc. Mainly it is connected with sports.
What kind of music do you like?
I like house music and Serbian music. It depends on how I feel.
What is your favourite food?
My favourite food is everything from my mother's kitchen but if I have to choose something then all types of pasta.
Do you follow international football? If yes, which is your favourite nation when it comes to football, and which is your favourite foreign Club?
In Serbia I support Red Star Belgrade, I grew up on the stands of that team. I enjoy watching English and Spanish football. My favorite team is FC Barcelona because of the style they play and Manchester United from England mostly becase of Nemanja Vidic who is one of my favorite defenders.
Who were your football heroes when you were growing up? And who are your football heroes now?
While I was growing up my favourite player, or I can say my idol, was Dejan Stankovic. At the moment I'm impressed with the level of Iniesta and Xavi and I'm enjoying watching them playing together.
Who is your favourite defender?
My favourite defender is Nemanja Vidic. In my opinion he is one of the best in world.
Do you agree that the defending position is the most important because if you do not concede a goal, you do not lose?
Position of central defender is very important because every mistake you made, you concede a goal, so you have to be focused and concentrated before and during the game, but in many occasions its very important that team plays as one unit because defenders alone can do nothing.
Why did you join Birkirkara FC again?
I decide to rejoin Birkirkara FC because I had great experience in the last 2 seasons. I like Malta as well, as it is beautiful country. I feel very good with this team and this coach, and that's most important thing for me.
After the second week with our Club, how are you feeling? Do you still need more time to settle in or do you feel back home?
I feel great. I have already settled down, I know all players, all the people in and around the club, so everything is ok for me. I feel like I'm at home.
What are your comments on today's game against Tarxien Rainbows?
Today we had a very good game, we were very compact, we managed to use some of the many chances. We closed their strikers and their offensive players very well and at the end we deserved to win. We played as a team and we should continue to play like this.
What are your comments on the next match against Hamrun Spartans?
Next week we're not playing, but we are looking forward to the game against Hamrun and we will go for the three points in that match which is very important for our aim, that is the Europa League.
Do you still believe that we can participate in UEFA Competitions?
Yes, UEFA Europa League is our aim and I believe that we can make it. Everything is open. It is up to us now to go on the pitch and earn as many points as possible.
What are your targets with our Club?
My targets are to give best possible performance every game and to help the club to go to Europe this year.
How important are the supporters for you and do you have a message for them?
Supporters are very important for us, with their help we give much more on the pitch. I know that Birkirkara has great supporters and they will be with this us till end.
