Roundup for the first round
by Ayrton Galea - 13th November 2011Last Friday Birkirkara manage to come back from behind and win with a 2-1 score against Balzan to complete the first round of the Premier League. In the following roundup we're going through the highlights of this round.
One should expect more from Birkirkara especially when considering their high targets before the beginning of the season. However when considering all the issues such as changing of coach, new signings to complete the squad and other important things, it can be said that overall this round ended on a positive and encouraging note.
Team Statistics
From the eleven matches played so far, Birkirkara won six, drew one and they were defeated four times. 'The Stripes' netted 21 goals while they conceded 14. This means that as an estimate Birkirkara scored 1.90 goals while they conceded 1.27 per match.
Birkirkara scored and conceded most of the goals in the second half as they scored 15 out of 21 goals while they conceded 10 goals out of 14 in the second half.
Birkirkara made three clean sheets against Qormi,. Hamrun and Floriana respectively.
The biggest win was on Saturday, 22 October against Hamrun Spartans when 'The Stripes' registered a 4-0 easy win. On the other hand, the biggest defeat was against Hibernians with a 3-0 score which was played on the 10 September.
The earliest goal by Birkirkara was scored by Rowen Muscat in the 3-2 defeat against Tarxien Rainbows on Sunday, 6 November. The latest goal was scored by Leighton Grech on the 93rd minute in the 4-0 comfortable win over Hamrun Spartans on Saturday, 22 October.
Last match against Balzan was the only match that after they went a goal down, Birkirkara managed to come back and emerge as winners.
Four penalties were ordered in matches involving Birkirkara, two in favor and two against. Birkirkara scored them all while our opponents which were Hibernians and Tarxien failed to convert as Mora blocks the attempts.
After the first round, Birkirkara are fourth, one point behind Floriana and two points ahead of Qormi and Sliema respectively.

Seventeen different players were used in these eleven matches. Rodrigo Pereira, Gareth Sciberras, Trevor Cilia and Moises Avila Perez all begin the eleventh matches so far but Gareth Sciberras is the most with minutes played. On the other hand, Terence Vella and Leighton Grech are the substitutions most used as they entered as substitutes five time each.
The top scorer for Birkirkara and the third top scorer overall is Moises Avila Perez who scored 8 goals.
Angus Buhagiar is the most player that collected yellow cards as he collected five cards. Andrew Decesare is the only player that was sent off by Birkirkara.
