Birkirkara end their season committments
by Ayrton Galea - 16th May 2011Birkirkara ended their season commitments as yesterday afternoon they were eliminated by Floriana in the U*BET FA Trophy with a score of 2-1.
It was not the best performance by Birkirkara. Many expected more considering the fact that they were in full squad, but Floriana were better from the first whistle and it was a deserved qualification for 'The Greens'.
One should mention that had Birkirkara won the match, Floriana had the right to lodge a protest over a technical error. When Rodolfo Kumbrevicius entered the field, Birkirkara were playing with five foreigners while the maximum permitted is four.
Floriana opened well, and after just two minutes they had the first opportunity. A corner kick by Christian Cassar was met by Daniel Nwoke's header which was deflected by Ivan Woods and it was turned into another corner kick.
On the 7th minute, Michael Galea served Andrew Decesare and from his cross, it was Matthew Towns to parry the ball.
Floriana took the lead on the 23rd minute when once again it was a corner kick taken by Christian Cassar, then Thomas Paris headed the ball to Christian Caruana and the latter beat Michael Fraser after a slight deflection by a defender.
From then onwards Birkirkara reduced their level of play and Floriana continued to be the best team with the first half ending in a 1-0 lead for 'The Greens'.
On the 46th minute, Mr. Paul Zammit made the first substitution as Ibrahim Babatunde replaced Andrew Decesare.
One became two, and Floriana temporarily closed the game on the 60th minute. A freekick taken by Christian Cassar, then Christian Caruana served Tyrone Farrugia who flicked the ball over Michael Fraser.
Birkirkara's reaction to this goal was quick and after six minutes they pulled one back when Tyrone Farrugia handled the ball inside the area and the referee ordered a penalty. From the eleven meters, Trevor Cilia made no mistake.
Shaun Bajada replaced Angus Buhagiar on the 67th minute in the second substitution for Birkirkara.
Daniel Nwoke had a golden opportunity on the 76th minute when a perfect cross from the left, all alone against the goalkeeper he headed wide.
On the 80th minute, Rodolfo Kumbrevicius replaced Patrick Borg for the last substitution for Birkirkara. This meant that Birkirkara were playing with five foreigners in the field.
The Full time whistle found the Birkirkara clan disappointed with this elimination and below average performance which ended the season on a negative note.
