Birkirkara dispose of Valletta
by Matthaeus Grasso - 19th February 2010In front of a group of noisy Birkirkara supporters, led by the Birkirkara Ultras, our squad has secured a place in the Gozo Cup final, with a narrow 1-0 victory against bitter rivals Valletta at the Gozo Stadium.
In the first half, our squad had the opportunity to score on a couple of occasions, but goal scoring opportunities for Sylvano Comvalius and Trevor Cilia all went begging. On the other hand, Omar Borg risked getting sent off, as he handled a ball outside his box to deny Valletta from a possession which could have easily been turned into a goal.
In a match which was characterized by a lot of possession play and fear of suffering injuries, by both sides, Birkirkara managed to score the only goal of the match after forty-eight minutes when a shot by our teams' attacking department was deflected in by the Valletta's defense, and onto Nick Vella's net.
Substitute Shaun Bajada, had a good chance to double the score a few minutes before the final whistle, but his shot from just inside the penalty area, went wide.
With this victory, our team will now face Hibernians who in the previous match, beat Gozo XI 2-1.
Whilst still being a friendly tournament, the Birkirkara FC clan would like to urge all of our supporters to make their way up to our sister island, and give support to our lads throughout the ninety minutes.
Come on Yellows!
