Unconvincing B'Kara up to second place

Despite performing at a decreased level than that shown against other opponents, Birkirkara managed to acquire an important and somewhat lucky 2-0 victory against Hamrun S.

The 'Spartans' started the match on a much higher note than that shown by our players, as Spanish goalkeeper Jorge Mora managed to block two very dangerous offensive attacks by our opponents, and moments later it was the woodwork that repelled Rupert Mangion's effort from opening the score for the Hamrun side.

During Birkirkara's first dangerous piece of action, Comvalius managed to hold-off a number of Hamrun S. defenders before serving Michael Galea, with the latter finding Maltese international Shaun Bajada, who curled-in a wonderful shot that flew past the opposing goalkeeper for the match's opening goal.

With the 'Spartans' still cursing their luck because they conceded during such a positive spell for their side, Birkirkara scored again through their best ever goal scorer, Michael Galea, who had ample time to control and arrange the ball before slotting it yet again past the opposing goalie.

A few seconds after the second goal, the referee blew for half-time with Birkirkara looking confident of securing the three points.

In the second half, Hamrun made no serious attempt to try and achieve at least an equalizer, and Birkirkara applied a simple possession game, which as time went by, seemed good enough for our side to bring the victory down to Valley Road.

Sylvano Comvalius, had a good chance of increasing the lead for the 'Stripes', but his shot from a direct free kick, although powerful, was too central for Ivan Casha, who pushed the ball away.

Later on, Shaun Bajada who had already scored in the first-half, had another good goal scoring opportunity, but his shot was too weak to trouble the opposing defence.

The referee's full-time whistle found the Birkirkara supporters happy with the win, yet unconvinced with the performance shown by some players throughout the ninety minutes.

With Valletta's surprising 3-1 defeat at the hands of Sliema W., Birkirkara are now all-alone in second place, just two points behind leaders Qormi.
