Birkirkara secure important victory
by Matthaeus Grasso - 27th December 2009Thanks to a good display of attacking football, Birkirkara FC have secured another important win which enables our side to keep the pace with title favourites Valletta and Qormi.
It took some time before our players started to produce some pieces of magic, but when the side started to play in the way it's renowned for, nothing could help troubled Tarxien R. from being on the receiving end of a heavy defeat.
Ten minutes from the end of the first period, Serbian defender Nikola Vukanac rose high above all of his team mates and opponents to head-in a cross from the right by Sean Bajada. Vukanac decided to share the delight of scoring his first goal for the club with the Birkirkara Ultras and the supporters in general, who were all pleased to see their determined defender having a good impact in the offensive part of the field, apart from the defensive zone.
With the first half ending 1-0, Birkirkara came out determined to show their best qualities to secure the win, and they got their reward when on the hour mark, Trevor Cilia was fouled in the penalty box, with the referee having no other option but to point to the spot, from which Sylvano Comvalius converted his first goal of the afternoon.
Soon after, Tarxien Rainbows clawed one back, when following a mix up in the box, Rocha Dos Santos, undoubtedly his team's most dangerous offensive player, went in for a rebound, in which he had no option rather than to slot the ball in the empty net.
Fifteen minutes from time, Sean Bajada was again the provider of yet another dangerous cross from the left, which this time found captain Michael Galea, who headed the ball in to make it 3-1.
More pain was inflicted in the heart of the Tarxien supporters, when one of their defenders, Vella Citrien, handled the ball in the box, and from the resultant penalty, it was Sylvano Comvalius who scored his second goal of the night, and put the Birkirkara supporters in total delirium.
Denni Rocha Dos Santos, was fouled in the box by Angus Buhagiar, and with the 'Stripes' supporters already sure of victory, they were presented with another reason to celebrate, as Jorge Mora saved the spot kick.
Substitute Karl Pulo, made the most of a series of mistakes by the Rainbows back line, as he took control of the ball and ran towards the opposing box, before slotting the ball low past the hapless Tarxien goalie.
The full-time whistle found our supporters cheering such a positive result, which rounds up the fixtures for this year. Birkirkara will now be involved in another BOV Premier League match next Sunday the 3rd of January, when our team faces Hamrun S.
