Message from the President
by Karm Galea - 10th December 2009I thought this is a very good time to write my first message to our supporters. The first reason is that we are at the end of the first round of our participation in the Premier league. The second reason is that this is the festive period when we give greetings to each other.
Yes we have arrived at our last game of the first round and this game is very important because, if we win, we might find ourselves at the top of the table. It is also important because we would be playing against Qormi who happen to be the present leaders and who are playing good football.
What about the performance of our team so far? Well, the first time I saw the present team play was at the Hibs ground in the Hibs tournament which we won on goal average after a draw against the Hibs team. I must say that I was impressed with the performance of our relatively young team and after the match I told our Coach that he can build on this team because there is good material in the squad. And, indeed, that is exactly what our first class Coach has done so far. If one looks at the table, one would see that, when there is only one game left to play in the first round, we are in the third place, just one point behind Valletta and three points behind Qormi. If one looks at how many goals we have scored, one sees that, together with Valletta, we have scored the highest score with 17 goals so far. So much for all the criticism that we don't have goal scorers! And what about the kind of football that our team is playing? Well, it is enough to say that I have heard/read at least two comments about this subject where the commentators expressed their opinion that Birkirkara are playing the best football at present. Indeed, our Coach is basing our game on fast football, attacking from the flanks and rotating roles according to the run of play during the game. The result is attractive football for all to see.
Back to the Qormi game. I said this is an opportune time to write this piece because I want to stress the importance of this game and urge you to feel part of this game. As you know the Committee is working hard to improve the administration of the Club and manage the Club in a professional way. It gives its full support to the Coach who, on a regular basis, shares his views with the Committee and discusses ways of improving our set up with the objective of strengthening our squad. What we want from you for this important match is bigger and more ferocious support. That, I think, is the only thing that Qormi has more than us. It might not be the deciding factor in the game but I'm sure that you agree that our players will appreciate your support during the game because with your support they would be encouraged to give that little bit more. So, for Saturday give the team your full support and urge people to come over to Ta Qali to give this important encouragement to our players.
As I said in the beginning of this message, it is Christmas time, the time of year many people wait for. It is the time when we want to find our inner peace and happiness; when, if we could, we would bring peace to every person on earth. Of course this is rather difficult! But what is not difficult is to make an effort to forget our differences, to make peace with our enemies and to work hard to make sure we have peace and happiness in our families. And this is what I and our Committee want to wish you all - A very happy Christmas and a very prosperous and peaceful 2010. And, of course, a very successful season for our team!
Finally, on the subject of the festive season, why not start this year's festivities by joining our family of supporters, players, technical staff and members of the Committee for the Dinner Dance being organized on Saturday 12 December at the Westin Dragonara. Hopefully, this would be a double celebration if we win the Qormi encounter on the same day!
